Engineered FRP Composites for Active Chemical Synthesis
While FRP has long been recognized for static chemical storage, advancements in high-heat vinyl ester resins (Derakane 470, vinyl ester novolacs) have established FRP reaction vessels as an economical, non-corroding alternative to Hastelloy, Monel, and glass-lined steel reactors in specialty chemical synthesis.
1. Agitator Nozzle & Top Head Structural Reinforcement
Industrial chemical agitation subjects the reactor top head to complex dynamic forces: torsional torque, vertical downward thrust, bending moments from fluid vortices, and rotational vibrations. Under BS 4994 & ASME RTP-1 design guidelines:
- Top Head Thickness: Dished heads are reinforced to 2x to 3x the standard shell wall thickness to minimize deflection under agitator motor-gearbox deadweight.
- Integral Gusset Reinforcement: Heavy radial composite gussets connect the central agitator mounting flange directly to the dished head knuckle radius.
- Independent Steel Support Bridge: For large agitator drives exceeding 7.5 HP, Nikunj Fibre Glass integrates external epoxy-coated structural steel bridges that transfer dynamic loads directly to the tank foundation, isolating the composite shell.
2. Internal Baffles and Vortex Suppression
To convert rotational swirl into axial mixing turbulence, reaction vessels require four vertical baffles positioned at 90° intervals (baffle width typically 1/10th to 1/12th of vessel diameter). Nikunj FRP baffles are fabricated with generous radius fillets to prevent stress concentration and solids buildup.
3. Limpet Coils and Dimple Jackets for Heat Transfer
For exothermic or endothermic chemical reactions, half-pipe limpet coils or dimple jackets fabricated from SS 304 or FRP are laminated to the external vessel wall to circulate chilled brine, cooling tower water, or hot thermal fluid.
