Introduction: The Challenges of 50% Caustic Soda Storage
Liquid Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide, NaOH 50%) is a staple chemical across textiles, paper, chemical manufacturing, and ETP plants. While not an acid, hot caustic soda attacks metals through caustic embrittlement and decomposes standard polyester resins via saponification.
1. Resin Chemistry: Bisphenol-A & Vinyl Ester
To resist alkaline saponification, FRP vessels for 50% NaOH must be fabricated with Bisphenol-A fumarate resins or specialized vinyl esters paired with synthetic veils (Nexus / polyester veil) rather than standard C-glass, which dissolves in strong alkaline environments.
2. Thermal Freezing & Heating Considerations
Commercial 50% NaOH freezes at approximately 12°C – 14°C (54°F – 57°F). Tanks installed outdoors in winter climates require external immersion heaters or heat tracing with internal thermo-wells.
