Introduction: The Dual Nature of Sulfuric Acid
Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) behaves radically differently depending on concentration. Dilute acid (<70%) acts as a highly aggressive, ionizing mineral acid, while concentrated acid (>93% to 98%) acts as a powerful oxidizer and dehydrating agent. Storing H2SO4 requires exact matching of polymer matrix to concentration.
1. Dilute & Medium Concentrations (10% to 75% H2SO4)
For concentrations up to 70% at temperatures up to 75°C, vinyl ester FRP (Derakane 411) or PP-FRP dual laminate provides exceptional lifecycle durability, far outlasting carbon steel.
2. Highly Concentrated Acid (75% to 98% H2SO4)
At concentrations above 80%, sulfuric acid aggressively oxidizes standard polyesters. For high-concentration storage, specialized high-density fluoropolymers (PVDF-FRP) or Novolac vinyl ester systems (Derakane 470) are required.
