Introduction: CPVC in Industrial Chemical Piping
Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) is rated for continuous operating temperatures up to 93°C (200°F), making it an excellent choice for hot corrosive liquids. Industrial buyers must understand the distinction between Schedule 80 (heavy-duty industrial) and Schedule 40 (standard duty) piping systems.
1. Wall Thickness and Pressure Capability
Both schedules share the same Outer Diameter (OD), but Schedule 80 features significantly thicker pipe walls, resulting in a smaller Inside Diameter (ID) and substantially higher internal working pressure ratings (up to 850 PSI for smaller diameters at 23°C).
2. Temperature Derating Factors
As operating temperature rises, allowable working pressure decreases. For example, at 82°C (180°F), CPVC working pressure must be derated by a factor of 0.50 (50% of nominal room-temperature rating).
